Salt River Local Arts Collaborative didn’t begin with a business plan. It began in a windowless classroom inside a county jail.

Our founder, Bobbi Buchanan, didn’t set out to work with incarcerated people. Like so many meaningful ventures, it happened sideways–through motherhood and proximity to addiction and recovery. As a teen mother who rebuilt her life through education, writing, and connection to the natural world, Bobbi understood early on that people are more than the worst decisions they’ve made.

When she began volunteering in the Substance Abuse Program at the Bullitt County Detention Center in 2015, she brought that understanding with her. What started as a creative writing class became something deeper: a space where people could tell the truth. Not perform it or polish it. Just tell it, raw and real.

In that room, inmates wrote about grief, regret, love, violence, hope, and the long road back to themselves. They cried. They listened to one another. They began, in small and significant ways, to see themselves differently.

With a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, Bobbi added a creative writing class for women at the jail in 2016 and put together anthologies of the inmates’ creative work. With funds from KFW and the James Baker Hall Foundation, Bobbi and a former student from the jail, Crystal Miller, ran a writing workshop for the Women’s Substance Abuse Program at the detention center from 2023 to 2024.

Over the years, the same truth emerged from those stark, cinderblock rooms at the county jail: people need a place to put their stories. And more than that, they need someone willing to receive them.

Salt River Local Arts Collaborative grew out of that understanding. We are a community of writers, artists, and performers committed to provide safe and sober spaces where people can create and share their art. Our members include emerging and established artists, young people finding their voice, and individuals in recovery from addiction, trauma, and incarceration.

Our programming reflects that mission: quarterly artist gatherings, a youth camp, a youth fellowship, a literary magazine, and the development of original stage work rooted in lived experience. All of it grows from a belief first shaped in that jail classroom: creative expression can be a way through.

We are building something bigger–a permanent arts space along the Salt River. But the heart of the work remains the same. A room. A page. A voice. Someone listening.
